For three days in late July, our eyes collectively turned skyward. We, as a species, sat helpless, united in hope that a satellite full of geckos tasked with a month-long sex romp would be safely returned to orbit — and indeed to Earth — after the Russian space ministry lost control of it. It is thus, with heavy hearts, we report that all five of the Geckos on-board died, according to the Russian space agency.

author: Ian Fleming review: After all the Bond films, going back to the source is an interesting experience. The book is leaner than I’d expected, and harder edged. Bond himself softens towards the end, but for most of the story he’s a driven and not particularly likeable character, but fascinating for it. The edition I read had a short essay in the front, putting the book in the context of its period and legacy. It commented that Bond could be seen as the start of a strand of stories which were careful to include technical details to give their worlds more depth. We learn about…

They calculate for range and target tracking, but not wind- which, I guess, is something you can’t work out with an optical system- and should greatly improve the accuracy of shooters with little or no training. Something like this is going in a story, I just haven’t decided which one. Update This documentary suggests that the sights can take wind into account. It also gives some more information on the weapon system…

As a major south swell is schedule to arrive later tonight and peak tomorrow, surfers up and down the California coast are preparing for some major surf. Many forecasters are reporting that this will be one of the biggest swells to hit our coastline in more than a decade. Is this hype? Only time will tell.  While all of this is very exciting, it is also important to remember that the ocean is very powerful and surf conditions can change quite rapidly. Rip currents will look more like rivers and side shore currents will surely pose a challenge to swimmers, bodyboarders and surfers alike.

While the Wedge in Newport Beach may have looked more like a playful and fun beach break this morning which was spitting out perfect barrels for those who ventured into the lineup, one must also remember how dangerous of a spot it really is. With heavy closeouts breaking in waist deep water, wonky backwash and unpredictable sneaker sets, the wedge is a fun, scary and hard to predict beast. The lineup was extremely crowded with local standouts like Dylan Cotton and top professionals including Jamie O'Brien; both of which were absolutely charging! All photos by Chase Miller

Day hikes are a great way to get amongst the outdoors, keep active and see some amazing scenery. No matter where you are there will be a day hike somewhere near you. You don’t have to be an experienced tramper to go on a day hike, nor do you need loads of gear. Here’s what you’ll need: • Hiking Boots – For a day hike a pair of sneakers are fine if you’re just starting out. Make sure they are comfortable and you don’t have any pressure points on your feet from the shoes. If you want to go hiking regularly then a pair of decent hiking boots is definitely something worth investing…
  • Gabriel Medina Wins Billabong Pro Tahiti

    Danielle Conwell
    26 Aug 2014 | 9:47 pm
Gabriel Medina won the Billabong Pro Tahiti after a close competition against Kelly Slater with a .03 difference in the final score. The two battled it out surfing some insanely epic waves at Teahupo in the final heat. After a restart, the Brazilian took the lead with a 7.90 and then a 9.07. Then, in an uncharacteristic mistake, Slater paddled for a wave but pulled back, losing priority. For the next 14 minutes, it seemed like Medina was in total control of the heat. Slater got back in the game with a massive, hollow barrel, taking a high line and getting spat out the other side to a roaring…

  • Hookah Diving: A Fun Way Of Diving

    Seaman
    6 Aug 2014 | 8:42 am
You know we use air compressors to fill our dive tanks. Compressor fills the tanks, we carry them on our backs and go for diving. Air (or whatever gas mixture is used) is compressed. In other words, we squeeze the air and put it in our dive tanks. This is the air logic behind the scuba. Now I want you to imagine with me. Find a buoy large enough to put a dive compressor on it in your mind. This buoy you imagine should be round and flat. Now put the compressor you see in your dive center. Remove your regulator second stage. Find a long hose and attach one side to your second stage and one side…
  • New Hollis H-160 Underwater Scooter (DPV) Review

    5 Aug 2014 | 11:00 pm
A couple of divewithseaman.com readers wanted me to write a review about New Hollis H-160 DPV right after I have published my Dive Xtras Sierra U/W Scooter review. We were checking Hollis H-160 in Dema Show when this scooter put on the market. I wasn’t actually interested in this product back then, because I was not writing reviews at that time. New was new and it had to prove itself first. But one of my fellow divers was convinced by the salesman (Dema price was also discounted, of course:) and he bought one. I dived two times with Hollis H-160, both were wreck dives. This review is a…

Last week, I was preparing my scuba for the next dive. I saw one guy holding an underwater scooter right in front of me. Diver Propulsion Vehicle (DPV) has always got my attention. See more beauty underwater in a limited time compared to non-dpv dives. Experience the water hitting your mask slowly like a breeze Explore more and more ! I have asked couple of questions to the DPV owner. He has seen how excited I am and told me that he is not feeling good that day for diving. “You can use it if you’d like to” he said. YESSSSSSS !! I then learned that I was using a Dive Xtras…
  • SeaLife Micro HD Announced

If you enjoy diving but still didn’t take a single photo underwater, this is your opportunity. SeaLife has introduced the SeaLife Micro HD. It is the first fully sealed camera which makes it a pioneer in the sector. There were some cameras that can be used without a housing underwater but they were limited to a certain depth. This made them “pool cameras.” SeaLife Micro HD, however, is a revolution in fully sealed underwater camera concept. It can be seen as a milestone. We are used to use or see the cameras inside giant underwater housing. With SeaLife Micro HD, you…

A very interesting and refreshing route. You can go against the current from the beginning at the “cross section” where the many stairs that lead to the tavern begin, or you can climb up all the stairs, pass through the top of the hill tavern, go down again and start from there. This alternative is for less experienced in climbing up at very slippery wet rocks (these are the first 100 mt).. From there you will find points where you need to swim to climb up, to climb up with ropes (few meters), etc. Its amazingly refreshing…. Then you can come down the same way. No need for…
